How to Choose the right School for you
Choosing your college or graduate program is a huge decision and investment in yourself. If you're lost on how to decide which school to attend, I've got you covered.
Sade's Tips for Success1. Number your top 10 priorities from most important to least.
Here are some examples of things that might appear on your list:
academic priorities: specific majors or classes that interest me
social-life priorities: whether my friends will be able to come visit me easily; how much financial aid is available for students who are low income or first generation students
cost/financial aid-related priorities: cost of tuition; whether I qualify for any grants or scholarships; which schools offer free housing (for example, Stanford has free dorms)
2. Make a list of colleges you are interested in & the top three reasons why are interested in each schoolA task like this may feel time consuming, but it's a really important step, especially if you're having trouble ranking your priorities from step 1. You'll see a trend as you start to list out why a school appeals to you the most (sports-school versus prestigious brand recognition etc.).You don't have to choose a college based on its reputation alone. You should also consider the school's location, culture and student life: If you want to go somewhere warm year-round, don't choose Boston University or Wisconsin-Madison. Also consider the financial aid package offered by each school: A great financial aid package can make up for lackluster academics or extracurricular activities.
