Fast FAFSA: Understanding FAFSA in under a Minute
The FAFSA application is driven by two main factors: expected family contribution (EFC) and cost of attendance (COA). The financial aid is then granted based on what you can afford versus what you actually need to pay.
Key Terms:
Expected Family Contribution (EFC): a measure of how much your school expects your family to contribute toward your education costs
Cost of Attendance (COA): the total cost of attending college, including tuition, fees, room & board and other expenses
Cost of Attendance may sound straight-forward; however, it's important to note that while most colleges use the same standard formula for calculating COAs across all schools (with minor adjustments), some schools may not include certain costs in their calculations—for example: if you attend an out-of-state school where tuition rates are higher than in-state schools but don't live at home with mom and dad anymore, then your EFC might not include any living expenses for yourself because parents aren't contributing anything towards them anymore. That's why it's so important that you fill out this form carefully.
