3 Things I Wish I Knew About Student Loans at Age 18

Unfortunately, not everyone's student loans qualify for student loan forgiveness in 2022. I know that paying off your student loan debt can be hard to think about. That's why I'm here to help tell you about some of the things I wish I knew before taking out student loans.

1. Every loan has different terms and accrues interest at different times

There are two main types of federal student loans: subsidized and unsubsidized. Knowing what you have can help you tremendously in preparing for future payments.

  • Subsidized loans are those that are given to you by the government and don't accrue interest while you're in school.

  • Unsubsidized loans are ones that you take out on your own and do accrue interest while you're in school. (is it worth it to pay off interest while in school?)

2. There are scholarships that pay off your student debt

If I knew about this at 18! I'd be a millionaire... jk I'd just have less debt and so can you. Here are three scholarships to help you pay off students loans:

3. Federal loans are typically better than private loans

There's so much that goes into choosing the right loan service provider, that I didn't know about at 18. Interest rates? boring. Payment plans? who cares. At 18, I wish I look more at the details.

  • Federal loans typically have lower interest rates than private

  • Federal loans don't need credit history to qualify

  • Federal loans have income-driven payments plan options

The Art of Winning: Letter of Recommendation Edition

When it comes to scholarship applications, a letter of recommendation can be the difference between winning and losing. Don't wait until the last minute to start asking around for letters of recommendation, because you'll be missing out on some of the most valuable resources in your quest for a scholarship—your professors, teachers, or advisors.

Tips for Success:

  • Pick someone who knows you well. If you're applying for a scholarship where an essay is required, pick a teacher or professor who taught you something that makes you stand out.

  • Make sure the recommender knows what kind of information is needed and when it's due by so they can give their best effort to writing it on time.

  • Your recommender may not realize the magnitude of the scholarship. If it's a nationally competitive scholarship, make sure they know.—especially if they're not in academia themselves!

  • If there's no essay requirement, make sure your recommender has spent enough time around you to know what makes you unique as a student since they will be essentially telling your story.

Don't know how to ask for a recommendation?
