The Scholarship Collective

Welcome to the Scholarship Junkie’s weekly newsletter, the Scholarship Collective. Where you can find educational content on all things higher education. From scholarships to post-graduation woes, I got you covered every Sunday by Noon.

What are Diversity Fly-In Programs (DFPs)?

Are you a high school senior who wants to visit schools out of state and don't have the money? These diversity fly-in programs are for you. Many schools do fly-in programs to help students come on a visit to the university before applications are due. Often, application fees are waived and travel is covered. The motivation is to get more diverse applicants to apply for the following academic year.

Diversity isn't just race or gender but also experiences such as being first-generation or a part of the LGBTQ+ community (here's a scholarship due soon if you are). Even if you don't have a "diverse" background many of these programs encourage you to apply anyway!  Always check the requirements before you count yourself out of an opportunity because you may qualify. The Art of Winning: Scholarship Essay Edition

  • Address the prompt without restating the prompt

  • Bring in your unique personal experience

  • Well executed story-telling

Applying for 25 scholarships and writing 25 essays is a feat no one should try to accomplish. The key to long-term consistency and avoiding burnout is to build a reusable essay. When writing a reusable essay it's best to cover as many prompts as possible. Create your essay with the most common essay prompts in mind. Navigating this process without guidance can be difficult and tedious but is ultimately worth it. It's an opportunity to finance your education by telling your story. Don't go it alone, seek feedback on your essays from friends, family, and even the writing center at your university or school.
