Sade goes live for another essay critique of a community member’s essay! This event goes LIVE on Sunday, October 23rd 7:00 PM EST. Want your essay to be considered? Email [email protected] with the essay and essay prompt. Don’t wan’t to miss it?

If you're applying to college, you already know that there are a lot of essays involved. And if you're applying to graduate school, even more so. But how do you write a personal statement that will set you apart from the pack?

Sade's Tips for Success:

1. Write about something that means a lot to you.

  • It could be something personal or something professional—but make sure it's something that really matters to you and has shaped who you are as a person.

2. Make sure your tone is clear and friendly throughout.

  • Even though this is an academic document, make sure it reads like a conversation with a friend or mentor who wants to get to know YOU better!

3. Stick to your theme.

  • Whatever you choose to write about for your statement, stick to it. Don't add random accomplishments if it's not relevant to the story you're telling.

  • Your essay should reflect who YOU are as a person, not just what your teachers taught in school!

Bonus Tip:

Research your school's mission. Not the general one for the college as a whole, but specific to the academic college (for example,

). If you can incorporate the mission in your personal statement naturally, go for it!
