One of my favorite professors in college once said, “If you come out of your 4 years in college the same person you were when you started, you need to get your money back”. Half of your success in college is the school (what they offer, how it aligns with your goals). The other half of your success is YOU. To put yourself out there in college (and in life), I find most students lack the confidence they need to try new things. Once upon a time, that was me.
Sade’s Tips for Success:How I Built My Confidence in College
1. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
The important thing to remember is that mistakes aren’t permanent—you can fix them! And if something goes wrong, don’t let it stop you from trying again.
Don’t worry so much about making mistakes that it keeps you from doing your best work or enjoying yourself while learning new things at college. Mistakes are part of growing up and becoming an adult—plus, you’ll never stop making them so just embrace it
2. Get comfortable asking for advice and for help
It can be easy to get into the habit of thinking that you know everything, or that asking for help means you don't know enough. In reality, it's not a sign of weakness—it's how we grow and improve.
3. Challenge yourself outside the classroom
Join student organizations
Join student organizations
If none of them interest you, create a student organization that does
I cannot stress how much getting involved in student organizations has shaped my future and self confidence. Putting myself in the room with the university’s highest ranking members as student body President did not happen right away. This started with me deciding I wanted to apply for treasurer for my school’s Student Government Association. Take small steps to be involved on your campus on any scale you want. It may lead to opportunities you didn’t know existed.
Bonus Tip:
You don’t need permission from anyone to try new things. You don’t have to do things with your friends for them to be fun or inspiring. Sometimes doing things alone is a great way to grow and learn new things about yourself.
